How to Fix PC and Registry Errors With Online Research
The key to fixing PC/registry errors is to start with the error message or code as a starting point. This article guides you through how to effectively find the root cause of such problems, and hopefully a solution.
The starting point for any error investigation is to work off of the error code/message. For application error pop-ups this can be a full message and code relating to code within the software.
Software developers use these exception codes to pinpoint areas of code where the fault occurs. It therefore makes sense to start hunting down a solution on the developers own website. Check for other customer comments relating to the same error and mention of any workarounds/patch updates that resolve the problem.
A wider search of independent sites may bring up uncorroborated workarounds and solutions so be careful about using these fixes as they may be untested.
Registry errors can start from a number of different causes (viruses, application conflicts, etc.). Virus damage to the file may be un-repairable by your anti-virus software.
If you experience registry errors only after installing some new software, then reverse the installation. The application may have over-written shared keys using by other software and the operating system. If you installed the software from a disk then check online for more recent installation versions (which hopefully wouldn’t contain the fault).
Many blue screen exceptions can be due to hardware issues or registry errors. If your research highlights that hardware could be conflicting (e.g. IDE conflicts) then temporarily remove any newly added hardware until you can get to the bottom of the fault.
A catch all approach to fixing registry errors is to make use of the last known good configuration option (seen as Windows boots up). This restores Windows system files (including the registry) to a previous dated version. The disadvantage of this is that more recent system changes (for example, application installations) may be lost in the process.
